Following his continued detention despite meeting his bail conditions, former National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki, has filed a suit against the Federal Government before the ECOWAS Court in Abuja and is demanding payment of N500 million damages for alleged rights infringement. ..

In the suit filed by his lawyer, Robert Emukpoeruo, Dasuki asked the court to declare his continued detention as “unlawful, arbitrary and an egregious violation” of his human rights. Dasuki in the suit also asked the court to declare that the alleged invasion of his Abuja and Sokoto residences on July 16 and 17, 2015 and the “forceful and unlawful seizure” of his properties, “without any lawful order or warrant” constituted a gross violation of his fundamental rights and offended the country’s treaty obligations as a signatory to the listed legal instruments.

No date has been set for hearing of the suit. In a related development, Justice Adeniyi Ademola of the Federal High Court, Abuja yesterday ordered the Federal government to produce him in court on February 16th. Dasuki's lawyer, Joseph Daudu (SAN), told the court that his client was abducted by security agents six weeks ago to an unknown destination. He told Justice Ademola that since the ex-NSA was whisked away, all efforts by his family and his lawyers to access him had been scuttled. Justice Ademola said:

“I am worried that the accused is not here. I do not want to set a bad precedent. Except the court gives express order for the defendant not to be in court, the accused must be brought to court from wherever he is. The accused must be here because I am not sure if what I am doing right now in the absence of the accused is not an illegality. Government and whoever is concerned must endeavour to do the necessary thing. The accused having been formally charged in court, must be produced in court for trial on the appointed days in compliance with the provisions of the law,”

Dasuki’s trial has been fixed for February 16 and 17 before Justice Ademola

As the pressure on federal revenue mounts following steady decline in oil revenue, the Federal Government would be resorting to a Sukuk Bond for funding the widening budget deficit, Vanguard reports. ..
Sukuk is a financial certificate, similar to the traditional government bond, but complies with Sharia, Islamic religious law.

The Debt Management Office, DMO, and Securities and Exchange Commission, SEC, are collaborating in an effort to issue the Nigerian sovereign Islamic bonds this year.

Details of the expected revenue from the bond is not yet disclosed but officials said they expect significant bridging of the 2016 budget deficit which has exceeded the initial N2.2 trillion estimate.

According to DMO “issuing a sovereign Sukuk will attract significant amounts of affordable capital from the Gulf countries and other established Islamic markets around the world into Nigeria.”

Former Governor of Osun State and former interim national chairman of APC, Chief Bisi Akande during an interview with reporters was asked what he thought about the continuous defection of politicians from the PDP to APC?..

He said:

The situation is like bringing together two pieces of wood to make furniture. If the wood is weak, the furniture will not be strong enough.

It is true that we put the party (APC) together in a hurry and we put it together by merging political parties but before it became a political party, and glued into one, election had come and we seemed to be more concerned with election than the making of the party.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on Thursday arraigned Dr. Bright Echefu before Justice S.C Amadi of the State High Court, Port Harcourt, Rivers on one-count charge bordering on Issuance of Dud Cheque and Obtaining by false pretense..

Echefu allegedly received computer accessories, laptops and stationeries which were delivered to his business premises at Touchville Hotel, Ada George Road, Port Harcourt by the victim. After the supply, he issued a post dated UBA cheque of N1.165m with a further agreement to pay the balance of N150k on a later date. .

But the cheque was returned unpaid due to insufficient funds in his account. All efforts made to recover the money by the victim, were futile. Justice Amadi adjourned the matter to 25th January, 2016 for hearing of bail application and ordered that Echefu be remanded in prison custody.

Echefu made national news last December after getting engaged to Florence Esu, a friend of his late wife, Cindy Nzeribe, barely 4 months after she died while pregnant with their 3rd child. The news of the engagement was met with massive outrage by Nigerians who felt he should have at least mourned the late wife a little bit longer before getting engaged again.
